GENU VALGUM (Knock Knees)

GENU VALGUM (Knock Knees)

It’s deformity that occurs when both knees touch each other and feet become away from each other while standing.

Genu valgum is a normal physiologic process, therefore it is critical to differentiate between a physiologic and pathologic process.

It is usually diagnosed in children between 2 and 5 years, most of cases are self-limited with growth, but it can progress to severity especially if the deformity was due to calcium, vitamins D deficiency or due to morbid obesity.

Clinical examination by measuring the distance between both feet .

Plain x-ray standing antero-posterior view showing the whole lower limbs.

Correction of the underlying causes.

Surgical treatment could be carried out by one of the following methods:

  • Growth readjustment by hemiepipgysiodesis using the 8-plate.
  • Corrective osteotomy.
  • In advance cases patient may need external fixation (Ilizarov) for correction of the deformity.
